Introduction to AP

Advanced Placement (AP) is an initiative in the United States and Canada, created by the College Board, that offers high school students the opportunity to take college-level courses and exams. Achieving high scores on these exams can lead to university credit, advanced placement, or both at many higher education institutions.

Some AP courses are closely related and provide complementary knowledge: 

AP Capstone Diploma Program: AP Seminar skills are essential for AP Research. Thus, AP Seminar is a prerequisite and must be taken before AP Research. Other AP courses do not have prerequisites. 

AP Calculus AB and BC:  AP Calculus BC includes all topics from AP Calculus AB plus additional concepts. Therefore, students cannot take both exams in the same year. The BC exam covers AB topics, and students taking BC also receive an AB subscore. 

AP Physics: There are four AP Physics courses: 

AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 are algebra-based. 

AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism are calculus-based. 

Physics 1 topics overlap with Physics C: Mechanics, and Physics 2 overlaps with Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism. 

AP Art and Design:  Consists of AP 2-D Art and Design, AP 3-D Art and Design, and AP Drawing. These courses do not have traditional year-end exams. Instead, students submit portfolios, and they can apply for any or all of these courses. 

Understanding AP Course Suffixes 

Suffixes like A, AB, BC, and C denote the difficulty and content level: 

• A: Introductory 
• AB: Intermediate 
• BC: Covers AB plus additional content 
• C: Advanced, calculus-based for Physics 

Course Selection Flexibility: 

Unlike the IB program, there are no mandatory courses or subject areas in the AP program. Students can choose courses based on their interests or career goals. 

AP Exams 

What You Need to Know About AP Exams?

Exam Format: AP exams typically consist of multiple-choice questions and free-response sections, which may include essays, problem-solving, or laboratory tasks depending on the subject. 

Scoring: AP exams are scored on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest. Colleges generally require a score of 3 or higher for credit or advanced placement, but this varies by institution and course. 

Exam Dates: AP exams are administered annually in May. The specific dates are determined by the College Board and can be found on their AP Central website. 

Who Can Take AP Exams? 

• Students in Turkey can take AP exams without completing the related course, except for AP Capstone (AP Seminar and AP Research). These courses are exclusive to schools authorized by the College Board to offer the AP Capstone Diploma Program. 
• Only students from schools implementing the AP program can enroll in AP courses. 
• AP courses are offered in high schools, but AP exams are open to both current high school students and graduates. Most test-takers are in high school, particularly 11th graders. When to take AP exams depends on individual goals, the number of tests planned, and college application timelines. It’s advised to start preparing for AP exams in 9th grade, with the bulk of exams taken in 10th and 11th grades, finishing by the end of 12th grade.

Who Organizes AP Exams? 

The College Board is the organization responsible for developing and administering AP exams. They provide resources, exam dates, and registration information through their official website. 

Registration Timeline

1. Fall Registration: Most schools encourage students to register for AP exams in the fall of the academic year during which the student will take the exam. The College Board recommends that schools set their registration deadlines by November. This helps in planning and ordering the necessary exam materials.
2. Late Registration: Some schools may offer a late registration period into early spring, but this often incurs additional fees.
3. Final Deadlines: Typically, the final deadline for AP exam registration is in early March. Exact deadlines can vary by school, so it’s important to check with your school’s AP coordinator for specific dates.

AP Capstone Diploma and AP International Diploma: 

• For the AP Capstone Diploma, students must complete AP Seminar, AP Research, and four additional AP courses with scores of 3 or higher. 
• For the AP International Diploma (APID), students need scores of 3 or higher on five AP exams across four different subjects.

Course Structure 

Each AP Physics course consists of 70 sessions, each lasting 90 minutes. These sessions include topic-based practice exams and dedicated time for solving unresolved questions. Please note that additional sessions may be required if numerous unresolved questions arise.

Class Format and Scheduling 

• Classes are available either one-on-one or in small groups of up to three students upon request. 
• All sessions are conducted online, allowing flexibility and convenience. 
• Schedules are arranged according to the availability of both the teacher and the students. 
• Students are liable for the full cost of the session if cancelled without a valid reason on the same day. 

Important Policies 

• Late arrival to class will result in a shortened session proportionate to the delay. 
• Sharing of educational materials provided by Aposto.biz (documents, videos, visuals) with third parties is strictly prohibited. 

Tuition and Payments 

• Half of the tuition is prepaid monthly, calculated based on the number of sessions scheduled each week. For example, if five sessions are scheduled per week, a monthly payment covering 20 sessions is required. This payment is divided, with 10 sessions paid at the beginning of the month and 10 sessions at the end of the month.

About Our Instructor 

Our lead physics instructor boasts 24 years of teaching experience, including seven years in the IB program and four years teaching AP Physics. She has taught at prestigious institutions such as Eyüboglu, TED Istanbul College, and İstek Schools. She hold a Bachelor’s degree from Marmara University, Faculty of Science and Literature, and is currently a PhD candidate in Physics at Yeditepe University, where she also serves as a teaching assistant.
